This Lake would have met the sea somewhere past present day New Haven as the glaciers melted and the mastodon roamed, not where the Connecticut now meets the sea. Legend says it changed when a giant (who is now the Sleeping Giant shown during the TV weather forecast and sometimes "might need a blanket" when it's cold) broke up a (also giant, much like the actual bear-sized ice age) beaver dam. Science says anciently an ice dam broke broke and the Sleeping Giant is a bedrock outcrop now a State Park.
