Nice eye for the animal/ serpent effigies incorporated into the 'walls.' There is definitely a flow there.
People in the past definitely had an expanded awareness about the natural world around them and I do believe this is expressed in the stone monuments- that is the only reasonable conclusion I can reach.
Your blog is VERY educational especially about finer details, I have learned a lot from it and have taken it with me in my understandings and experience!
It's probably only in the last two years that I've begun to realize the way some stones create multiple images, depending on where you are looking at them, how the light casts shadows etc. This isn't too far from that "serpent gateway" with the grey boulder with the white eye at a preserve originally the home of the first Puritan minister in town...
