Clearing Piles in the Field Around the Very Large Mound

The Very Large Mound was built on a steep hillside. It somehow seems taller than it is because of that. My best guess about why it has grown in with trees is because it's so steep - I haven't found an accurate topo map,but I often find those maps aren't always correct.
And it seems to be deliberately "built." There are many dumped piles of stones cleared from the field - dumped on zigzag and linear rows, as well as in series of piles along a perimiter toward the inside of the field, among the barberries and roses, blackberries and raspberries.
